About this service

Whole-home rewiring: what to expect

Whole-home rewiring means replacing the electrical wiring throughout a house. It usually makes sense when the existing wire is old, damaged, or can't handle how a modern home uses power. At TopTech Electrical in Livermore, we rewire room by room, so most of the house stays usable while the work moves forward.

  • Signs your home needs rewiring

Homes built in the 1960s and 1970s often contain aluminum branch wiring, which can loosen at connection points and overheat. Older cloth-insulated wire is another common problem. Many older kitchens also lack enough circuits for today's appliances. Warning signs include:

    • Outlets or switches that feel warm or look discolored
    • Lights that flicker or dim when a large appliance starts
    • Breakers that trip repeatedly
    • A burning smell near outlets
  • How the job goes

We start with a visit to check the panel, the wire types, and how many circuits the home has. You then receive a free written estimate. Once you approve, we file the electrical permit. New wire is run through the house, and the inspector checks it before any walls or ceilings are closed. After devices and fixtures are connected, we patch and finish the surfaces we opened and schedule the final inspection.

  • What affects the cost

The size of the home, the number of circuits, and how many walls and ceilings must be opened all matter. Attic and crawlspace access, the condition of the panel, and the finish work also play a role. Adding circuits may mean checking whether the existing service can carry the new load, and a panel upgrade may be part of the plan. Your written estimate lists these items before work begins.

  • Permits and safety

In California, rewiring requires a permit, and the building department inspects the work before final approval. Inspections protect you by confirming wire sizing, breaker matching, and grounding. Aluminum wiring is not always a full rewire: approved aluminum-to-copper connectors can make some homes safe, and we will tell you which option fits your house.

  • EV charger & new circuits
“Alex took the time to debug my panels and found I had plenty of amperage for my projects, when other electricians were trying to upsell me on more amps than I needed. He was also the only one ensuring we get a permit and do everything the right way.”

Good questions

Questions about whole-home rewiring.

What people ask before they book. Text us anything else.

Do I need a permit for whole-home rewiring in California?

Yes. Rewiring projects require an electrical permit, and inspections are needed before the work is approved.

Do I have to move out during rewiring?

Usually not. We work room by room to keep most of the house in use, though the room being worked on will be disrupted.

Does all aluminum wiring need to be replaced?

Not always. Some homes can be made safe with CPSC-recognized COPALUM or AlumiConn connectors, while others need full rewiring. A licensed electrician can inspect the wiring and recommend the right option.

Will you repair the walls after rewiring?

Yes. We patch the surfaces we open as we go, so the house is finished when the job is complete.
