About this service
Lighting installation & repairs: what to expect
Lighting work ranges from replacing a worn fixture over the sink to adding a set of recessed lights to a remodeled living room. TopTech Electrical installs and repairs recessed, under-cabinet, landscape and exterior lighting, along with dimmers and smart switches. Each fixture is planned so it sits evenly and in the spot where the light is actually needed.
Signs you need lighting help
A dead fixture is the obvious sign, but others are easy to miss. Lights that flicker when dimmed, a switch that buzzes or feels warm, or a fixture that works only when wiggled all point to a wiring or compatibility problem rather than a bulb. Dark work areas, a walkway that is unsafe after sunset, or an outdoor light that keeps tripping a breaker are also good reasons to call.
How the job goes
- Visit to look at existing fixtures, switches and wiring
- Plan for placement, trim style and control type
- Power shut off at the breaker during installation
- Testing of every fixture and control before cleanup
For new recessed lights, the electrician checks joists, insulation and ceiling space before cutting, so the fixtures are spaced evenly and fit the framing.
What affects the cost
The number of fixtures, whether new wire must be routed through finished walls or ceilings, and the type of fixture all change the scope. Insulation-contact rated recessed cans, low-voltage landscape systems and smart controls each add work compared with a basic swap on existing wiring. TopTech provides free written estimates, so you can see the scope before any work begins.
Permits and safety
Projects that add recessed lights to a ceiling that had none usually fall under permit rules. A like-for-like fixture swap on existing wiring frequently skips that step. Because lighting connects to your home's wiring and sometimes its insulation, the work should follow the California Electrical Code and be done by a licensed contractor.

- EV charger & new circuits
“Alex took the time to debug my panels and found I had plenty of amperage for my projects, when other electricians were trying to upsell me on more amps than I needed. He was also the only one ensuring we get a permit and do everything the right way.”
- Same-day service
“TopTech Electrical was incredible. Alex was very responsive and came out same day.”

Good questions
Questions about lighting installation & repairs.
What people ask before they book. Text us anything else.
Do I need a permit for new recessed lighting?
Adding recessed lights where none existed, or running new circuits, usually requires an electrical permit in California. Swapping a fixture for a similar one on the same wiring often does not.
Why is my light flickering after I installed a dimmer?
Flickering often means the dimmer and the LED bulbs are not compatible, or the wiring or load is not matched to the dimmer. An electrician can check the switch, bulbs and wiring to find the cause.
Can you install smart switches on existing wiring?
In many cases yes, but the switch must be compatible with the wiring and any neutral connection in the box. The electrician will confirm this during the visit.
Is landscape lighting part of this service?
Yes. TopTech Electrical installs landscape and exterior lighting as part of its lighting installation and repair work.
