What it takes to add a Level 2 EV charger at home

Most EVs charge overnight on a 240 volt circuit. Here is what we check before installing a Level 2 charger, and what to expect along the way.

A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, the same kind of circuit as an electric dryer. For most drivers it refills the battery overnight, where a regular outlet can take days.

First: can your panel handle it?

A charger is a large load that runs for hours. We start with a load calculation: what your panel is rated for and what the house already uses. Many homes have room for a charger as they are. Some need load management, and some need a panel upgrade.

Plug-in or hardwired

Chargers either plug into a 240 volt outlet or connect directly to the circuit. A hardwired charger can usually deliver more power and has fewer parts to wear out. We help you pick what fits your car and your garage.

Where it goes

The best spot is close to where you park, with a short, protected run from the panel. A longer run adds cost, so we measure before we price it.

Permits and inspection

EV charger circuits are permitted and inspected. That protects you with your insurer and when you sell.
